How To Make Sculpey Earrings

One of the first things women want from me when I tell them I am a polymer clay artist is they want earrings. I tell them if I don't have what they want that they can make it. It's easier than you think! Below is a prepared video that shows you how easy it is on how to make Sculpey Earrings. If you are not an artist it is still easy. All you have to do is use stamps, or a method called "stacking" which is creating the earrings by layer and basically putting the clay together like a puzzle piece to create the work of art. What you need are earrings hoops and hooks, polymer clay, tools, and some stamps(optional). Then you make the design you want by using the stamps and piecing together your design. Throw it in the oven at 275 degrees for 15 minutes, loop in your ears, and go your separate way and be the envy of all your friends. Thanks to Barbara McGuire.

What is Polymer Clay Millefiori Technique?

Polymer Clay Millefiori is the process of combining different color clays into canes, and rolling it together to make beautiful patterns and art like flowers. Canes are what is rolled together into a circle so that the pieces of clay form together. Usually what is done afterward is cutting the cane into medium thickness widths for beads, scrapbook embellishments and other craft projects. Polymer clay is just the type of clay and includes the brands Sculpey, Fimo and Primo which can be found at most art and crafts stores. Or the products can be bought online. Here is a good video that shows the technique of creating millefiori and how to do it for beginners.

How to Make Polymer Clay Beads Tutorial

Learn how to make polymer clay beads with this video tutorial. It goes step by step on how to prepare the clay, what materials you will need, the difference between a round, cane, and custom bead is.

What I really like about this video is how simple yet effective it is. Beginners will understand what is going on easily. While pros can still watch and pick up some new tips to help perfect and hone making beads with polymer clay. Learn how to buff and shine your beads without leaving those fingerprints. That's the hardest part, but the tips are here to help you out.

This video runs 5 minutes long so its just the right amount of time to follow along. Rochelle Dahl is a pro in this industry. She's a fashion designer in the industry, and uses polymer clay to make great designs.

The best tip I learned is about using corn starch or talcum powder to prevent objects from sticking to the clay. But I don't want to give everything away. So check out the video.

Polymer Clay Tutorial Videos For Beginners

A 10 minute video for beginners in polymer clay. It covers the basic clay tools, where to get them, and how to use them. It is produced by Polymer Clay TV, and it is a basic overview for those new to the polymer clay artform. If you are advanced or already into clay, you might want to skim it, as it still has some good tips. I've been doing clay for over 10 years and eve learned something from it.

Again, it's a good beginner's video on kneading clay, where to buy it, how to use it, etc. It is more geared towards those that want to use colored craft clays rather than more technical artistic work, but whatever your fancy you will benefit from this video either way.

This is only episode one, so there are more videos in the series and I hope you will check them out.

Cheap Ways To Make Polymer Clay Tools

I've been using and playing with polymer clay for over 10 years now. When I first started I was in junior high, I didn't have a lot of money, and I didn't have many supplies. Most of my money went into polymer clay and then I didn't have enough to purchase tools, which were expensive, costing as much as $10-50 tool.

So I had to get creative. Through my creativity I was able to come up with some of the best tools that cost my pennies or less, and I still use them today.

My favorite tools are knitting needles. My grandma does a lot of knitting and I was at her house one day, and I put the idea to use those with sculpting. You can get knitting needles in all sorts of sizes, and they make good smoothing and manipulating tools for edges and hard to reach places.

Dental tools - I went to my dentist and asked him if he had any old sets. He said that they through out tools on occassion and promised me some. After going home and immediately boiling them for sanitary reasons, they are great. I also pick up algernate from the Dentist for making one-off molds.

Texture tools - For texturing tools I tried to think of the texture I need and find a material that replicates it. For hair, I simply take several sewing needles, push them down in a pencil shaped polymer clay tube that I've rolled, and then bake it. Or I have used leaves, and leather, and shoes, and rocks, and you get the picture.

That's the easiest tool though is find the shape you need in objects you already have. If they can be baked make a "snakey" with polymer clay and jab the end of the clay with the object firmly in place. After baking you have a tool that will last you a life time.

For makeshift rolling pins I have used toilet paper or paper towel rolls, weighted the inside with rocks or something, heavy and plugged the ends with clay.

These are just a few ideas for you to make cheap tools with good results.

Why and How To Leach Your Sculpey Polymer Clay

What is leaching?
Leaching is the process of removing the oils out of Sculpey so that it is easier to work with. We all love Sculpey, but most agree that it is too soft and especially in humid areas becomes too sticky. This process eliminates this making Sculpey both firm and pliable. Sculpey actually has come out with a new firm sculpey, but don't buy it because when you leach your regular Sculpey it is the exact same thing.

Here is the process to leach sculpey:

You will need Sculpey, two 8.5"x11" pieces of paper(computer paper works fine), rolling pin or pasta roller, books or heavy objects
Make the sculpey thin either with a rolling pin or pasta roller. 1/8" - 1/4" is good
Place thinned sheets of sculpey in between the two pieces of paper
Place a bunch of books or heavy weights over the sculpey. It's important that the weight is distributed equally over the clay.
Wait anywhere from 1-4 hours.
Remove sheets of paper. You will see leached oil residue on the paper. Enjoy your firm clay

If clay happens to become too brittle that's okay. Sculpey has what's called Sculpey Diluent which will bring it back to life if you work it through it.

How to Make A Polymer Clay Figure Armature

Want to learn the process from beginning to end in making a sculpey figure? Than you've come to the right place. Obviously from above you can see I don't know how to paint, but this isn't a tutorial about painting, it's about sculpting.

My clay of choice is Super Sculpey(not the regular white sculpey, it's far to sticky).

To complete this tutorial you will need Super Sculpey, tinfoil, wire(medium thickness), tape, and glue. Oh yeah, pencil and paper.

First thing you want to do is draw your figure to scale. Since Sculpey needs to bake in an oven, most likely your piece won't be bigger than 12 inches or so, or will be made in multiple pieces. What you need to do is draw a to scale replica of your figure.

As you can see I drew the figure, than drew a stick representation of the armature. An armature is basically the bones of the sculpture that will help support it.

The picture also includes the next steps which is piecing together your armature. My armature isn't too advanced since turbit doesn't have any complex joints, so I just taped the joints and then wrapped them with tape.

Next step is to wrap the bulk of the character in tinfoil. When baking Sculpey you only want thin layers no thicker than a quarter of an inch. So bulk your figure out.

After that it's sculpting time. This isn't a tutorial on sculpting, so I will let your imagine run with it. Just get your tools and your fingers loosened up and build it. One tip is to use rubbing alcohol to smooth out the clay. Also, use your drawing as reference while you sculpt.

Doing this will provide a more complete figure that can be better anatomically, and can support many different configurations, and wild joints and limbs.
